In order to know
the printing technology in the Academic
Publishing and Press, we have to give a brief
description for the following departments or
sections: |
|
Computer Section: |
|
This is considered
an important section since it makes all the
necessary corrections and modifications made by
editors, designers, authors and page-proof
readers. Due to the increasing development in
office publishing and typesetting, this section
has been enhanced and it has become to use the
electronic publishing at its utmost, in addition
to providing the section with high-skilled
personnel in typesetting and following the
international academic publishing standards. |
|
The Design
unit: |
|
This unit works on formatting materials and
creating all the necessary designs according to
the technical standards. This unit has been
provided with modern Macintosh and IBM computers
to perform all the aforementioned works
electronically such as formatting, page
designing, cover designs, insertion of figures
and graphs, etc. |
|
Montage Section: |
|
This is also an
important section since it has most of the
publishing chores such as photocopying and
montaging all publications. It has the following
unit: |
|
Montage and Photocopying unit: |
|
It is a complete
unit with modern PCs in which it has been
provided with a film recording machine to
perform all necessary chores such as measuring
colors, storing them and inserting them in the
text, in addition to inserting figures. This
process will provide a film ready to be
photocopied on offset boards (plates). All
computers have been connected to this film
recording machine, and with that all the works
are done through the computer instead of the old
manual style. |
|
Printing Section: |
|
It is one of the
sections that handle the printing chores for all
the university publications. It is divided into
three units: |
|
Offset unit: |
|
This unit prints books, journals and forms that
are used in various university administrations
and deanships, in addition to printing booklets,
brochures, etc. |
|
GTO unit: |
|
This unit prints
covers, envelops and the necessary forms for the
university hospitals. |
|
Typo unit: |
|
This unit provides
the necessary forms for the university such as
cards and envelops, in addition to breaking
files and preparing them automatically. |
|
Binding Section: |
|
This section comes
in when the printing works are done. It has
three units: |
|
Folding unit: |
|
This unit does the
folding of papers according to the sizes of the
books. |
|
Binding unit: |
|
There are two
types of binding in this unit to the size of the
publication. If the publication has a large
number of pages, the binding is done
automatically by placing the book/publication on
stations/machines for collecting and installing
covers. On the other hand, if the publication is
small, the binding is done manually by
collecting, gluing and stapling these small
publications. |
|
Cutting unit: |
|
This unit does the
final touches on the publication. It has many
high-quality automatic scissors that are set
according to the desired sizes for the
publications. This unit has well-trained
personnel to operate the cutting works for
various publications. |
|
Digital Printing
Section: |
|
This section has
machines connected to computers that give
commands for operating and photocopying. It also
has modern color photocopying machines which
print and photocopy scientific papers,
guidebooks, brochures and reports, and then bind
and staple them automatically. This section has
trained personnel in using computers for
different printing processes. |
|
Quality and
Production Monitoring Section: |
|
This is one of the
important and recently established sections that
guarantees the quality of the publications that
released by the university. This section reviews
and checks the publications during the printing
process. It also checks the order of the page
numbers during the printing in order to match
the table of contents of the book/publication,
in addition to checking the publication after
being printed to find any technical errors that
may occur. |
|
Maintenance
Section (Workshop): |
|
This section
performs the periodic and immediate maintenance
for printing machines and such, in addition to
servicing the personal computers in the
administration. |
|
Electronic
Publishing Department: |
|
This department is
still under construction. It will install a
complete network that links all the PCs in the
administration, in addition to providing
machines that burn CDs (Compact Discs) for the
released publications and labeling them
automatically, and then putting these CDs in
jackets that are placed in the back cover of the
publication. |
